The woman sighed wearily as she started moving downstream, staying close to the riverbank despite the tangle of low growth and shrub trees lining its route. Humanity had been fighting this endless war for fully eight centuries, in some periods more hotly than in others, but always fighting. Humans had begun it, too, a few misnamed humans who, in their insatiable greed and lust for ultimate power, had discovered the ways to unlock the powers of sorcery and had used it to summon things from the Dark Realms where wills other than that of the Great Creator held rule. They had failed to control what they had drawn, of course, as reason should have warned them would probably prove to be the case. They had been amply punished by their supposed servants, but destruction had not come to them alone. This sorry wilderness in which she found herself replaced what had been their capital city. The great metropolis had died in a single night of unspeakable horror, not the guilty alone but myriads of normal men and women and their innocent children along with them. Nothing had remained come the following dawn. The very metal and stone of the buildings had been thrown down and, for the most part, completely pulverized.
